Why Your Pores Look Bigger After 30
And why your cleanser is only solving part of the problem
You probably did not notice it all at once. One morning, in a certain light, you looked in the mirror and thought: I feel like my pores have gotten bigger. Not dramatically, not overnight. Just... different than they used to be.
Your foundation sits differently now. The texture along your cheeks looks rougher. In the unforgiving frame of a video call, you can see things you never used to think about.

Because if you do not understand why your pores look different, you will keep buying products that only fix one piece of a three-part problem.
First: pores do not actually open and close
Before anything else, a correction that changes how you think about this.
Pores are not tiny doors. Hot water does not open them. Cold water does not close them. Steam does not unlock anything. These are among the most persistent myths in skincare, and they have sent a lot of women down routines that feel thorough but are not targeting the real issue.
A pore is simply an opening on the skin surface where a hair follicle meets a sebaceous gland. It does not have a muscle. It cannot dilate on command.
What can change is how visible it looks. And that is a very different question.
Three reasons your pores look more noticeable now
Not every enlarged-looking pore comes from the same place. Research on facial pores consistently points to three distinct factors, and most people are only addressing one of them.
1. Oil and congestion at the opening
Sebum fills the follicle opening. When there is more of it, or when it mixes with dead skin cells and stays there, the opening looks darker, wider, and more defined. This is what most pore-focused products target.
Here is where it gets interesting: the common assumption is that skin produces more oil after 30, making pores look bigger. The science says otherwise. Sebum production often decreases with age. What changes is how everything around the opening behaves, which brings us to the other two factors.
2. Surface texture around the opening
A pore does not exist in isolation. The skin around it determines how it catches light.
Younger skin has a more uniform surface texture. Light reflects off it more evenly, so small openings blend in. As the architecture of the skin outer layer changes with age and sun exposure, the micro-texture becomes less uniform. Small depressions cast stronger shadows. The same-sized opening becomes more visible simply because the landscape around it changed.
This is why the same pore can look completely different in different lighting conditions. The opening itself has not grown. The surface around it has shifted.
3. Structural support around the pore
This is the part most articles skip past too quickly.
The skin connective tissue provides a kind of scaffolding around every pore opening. When that scaffolding is well-organised, the opening sits flat and compact against the surface. As the skin structural environment changes over time, that support becomes less consistent. The opening can appear wider not because the anatomy changed dramatically, but because the surrounding structure no longer holds it in the same way.
One large study tracking over 2,500 women found that pore visibility does tend to increase gradually through the 30s and into the 40s, but the effect varied significantly between individuals and was strongly influenced by genetics and ethnicity. Thirty is not a biological switch. It is a period when small cumulative changes start to become visible in the mirror.
What this means for your routine
Most pore-focused routines work on reason one. They cleanse, they clear, they reduce surface oil. That is not wrong. It is just incomplete.
For congestion and oil: Niacinamide helps regulate sebum at the surface. BHA (salicylic acid) is oil-soluble and works inside the follicle opening, loosening buildup. In one clinical study, regular glycolic acid treatments reduced the number of noticeable pores by an average of 34 percent. Not by shrinking the anatomy, but by clearing the congestion that made each opening more prominent.
For surface texture: Regular exfoliation with AHAs or BHAs smooths the skin around the opening, which reduces the contrast that makes pores visible. Think of it as improving the landscape rather than filling in the holes.
For structural support: This is where the approach changes category.
Surface treatments can make a congested pore look cleaner and less obvious. That is different from doing anything about the structural environment around it. For that layer of the problem, the options involve working deeper in the skin.
Microneedling operates on a different principle than a serum or an exfoliant. Instead of acting on the surface, it creates controlled microscopic injuries that start a repair response in the skin. Research has documented that this process is associated with collagen remodeling in the deeper layers. That reorganization can improve how the skin around each pore is structured over time, which is why microneedling is often used specifically for texture and pore appearance.
This does not mean microneedling is the answer to all visible pores. If the primary cause is oil and congestion, clearing the surface matters more. If it is structural, the approach needs to work at a deeper level.
Which is why the question worth asking is not how do I shrink my pores but which of these three things is driving what I am seeing.
The myth that keeps routines stuck
The most expensive misconception in this category is the idea that large pores mean dirty skin.
They do not.
Pore visibility is tied to follicle size (partly genetic), sebum production, the tissue surrounding the opening, sun exposure over years, and changes in the skin surface architecture. Understanding this matters because it stops the cycle of over-cleansing and over-exfoliating in the hope that aggressive surface work will eventually produce structural change. It will not. The tools that address congestion and the tools that address structural support are different.
The makeup clue most people miss
If your foundation looks different than it used to, that is often one of the clearest signals about which factor is at work.
Foundation catching in the pores and looking uneven after an hour tends to point toward congestion and surface texture. Foundation looking different on application, where the skin itself looks less even from underneath, often points more toward structural changes.
Neither is irreversible. But they respond to different approaches, and treating one when the other is the primary driver is why so many routines stop producing results.
